The End

Had the newspaper banquet tonight at Parma's and got to say goodbye to my seniors. It was a nice time and a nice meal. The Elite Eight are gone. It'll be interesting to see what next year brings.

I always hear teachers saying that the reason they teach is because of the kids. I always thought that was more or less crap until this year. What a special bunch. I wish them all the best of success.

Now it's summer and the heatwave is coming. So what's it gonna be Bryan? Coast, Hill Country, Big Bend, or Santa Fe?

Five Top Goals for the summer
1. Find a new apartment
2. Start reading again
3. Save $$$
4. Start working this new Natural Slim plan
5. De-stuffify

Hopefully Garry and I will be going to the DMA tomorrow to catch the Imperial China exhibit before it is gone. And maybe I'll catch a return matinee of Episode III.

BTW, here's my 101-word review of Revenge of the Sith.

A film that could fully please nobody was satisfying enough to me that I rank it third behind ESB and ANH all time. I really appreciated the fact that Jedi don't turn to the dark side because they desire to be in touch with evil, but rather are overcome by their passions (in Anakin's case - love). Visually stunning and packed with plot, the movie is a little too full and not without flaws (including painfully awkward screams from James Earl Jones). Nonetheless, it is a ride and means to an end. The finishing touches on the greatest villain in movie history.

Seasons

"I got such a mess between my ears like dishes in the sink
Stuff I don't believe just tumbles in until I don't have room to think
These dark clouds I've stowed away just in case of a sunny day
So I can stand in the pouring rain of every tear I've ever shed
I've got to empty out the inside of my head"
-David Wilcox, "Inside of my head" - What You Whispered

Casey is out of high school. So are my seniors from my first year at LHS. How will things change? For Casey... for my kids... for my future staff... Seasons are changing too... I heard it was over 100 degrees in Dallas Thursday... goodbye spring, hello hot, oppressive summer.
I need some changes too. I feel so unsteady, like I'm walking on shaky ground.

"This could be a room with such a view, but its covered up with junk
Blocking off the place the light gets through so it keeps me in this funk
All my failures are on display, the broken dreams of yesterday
Stuff I should have thrown away, but I've kept it here instead
I've got to empty out the inside of my head"

Planning a road trip with Bryan for this summer. Hopefully everything will work out and we'll have a blast. I've also got to find an apartment this summer...and move... and prepare for next year. Will this be the year that I'll finally take control over my finances? My apetites? My health? Or will I just keep sitting here? I'm being assulted by doubt.

"I'd like to turn this place into my home instead of someplace that I dread
It's the only place thats mine alone, and I'll live here 'til I'm dead
I'll sort through what I have found, the stuff that works I'll keep around
But I can't live weighted down with every cruel word they said
I've got to empty out the inside of my head"

Hope remains.

Thanks you Mavs. Thank you Jason Terry. Thank you Josh Howard.
Congrats to my main man Stevie Nash on being the league MVP.
But I sure hope Dirk is the one looking like the MVP against Phoenix.

In other news, happy birthday Case. Hopefully it will be a great day for you.

THIS OLD PORCH
- l. lovett, r.e. keen
This old porch is like a big old red and white Hereford bull
Standing under a mesquite tree
Out in Agua Dulce
And he just keeps on playing hide and seek
With that hot August sun
Just a-sweatin' and a-pantin'
Cause his work is never done
And this old porch is like a steaming, greasy plate of enchiladas
With lots of cheese and onions
And a guacamole salad
And you can get'em down at the LaSalle Hotel
In old downtown
With iced tea and a waitress
And she will smile every time
And this old porch is the Palace walk-in
On the main street of Texas
That's never seen the day
Of G and R and Xs
With that '62 poster
That's almost faded down
And a screen without a picture
Since Giant came to town
And this old porch is like a weathered, gray-haired
Seventy years of Texas
Who's doing all he can
Not to give in to the city
And he always takes the rent late
So long as I run his cattle
And he picks me up at dinnertime
And I listen to him rattle
He says the Brazos still runs muddy
Just like she's run all along
And there ain't never been no cane to grind
The cotton's all but gone
And you know this brand new Chevrolet
Hell it was something back in '60
But now there won't nobody listen to him
'Cause they all think he's crazy
And this old porch is just a long time
Of waiting and forgetting
And remembering the coming back
And not crying about the leaving
And remembering the falling down
And the laughter of the curse of luck
From all of those passerby
Who said we'd never get back up
This old porch is just a long time
Of waiting and forgetting
And remembering the coming back
And not crying about the leaving
And remembering the falling down
And the laughter of the curse of luck
From all of those sons-of-bitches
Who said we'd never get back up
ADIOS DAYS - p. green
Adios days in the wide open prairie, nights on the canyon are gone,
Steven is dead and Jonny got married, me I'm here all on my own.
I used to have nights on the town of Laredo, spinning the girls cross the floor,
now I'm too old for dancing and too far gone on the whiskey,
so I don't go down there no more.

Chorus

My dad was a top hand when he was a young man, rode for the Diamond-Bar-J,
he'd push all day long from the back of his pony, nighttime he'd gather up all his strays.
He hated the cities and he cussed all the railroads, said they would lead us to fall,
now we have street cars and the cowboy is dying, I guess he weren't too far from wrong.

Chorus

Chorus 2x

Namesake

Even though this blog is called "Skunkape Revival," so far I have not posted much in relation to our hairy, cryptozoological allies. All that changes now.

Oct. 14-16, 2005 - The Fifth Annual Texas Bigfoot Convention in Jefferson, Texas. I am SOOOO there.

"There are several misconceptions regarding the creature we call Bigfoot. Some
people consider this creature to be a monster. Bigfoot is not a monster. We are
dealing with a primate, an elusive primate, not a monster, the "missing link", a
shape-shifter from another dimension or an extra-terrestrial being. There are
many regional names that these creatures are called. Sasquatch, wildman, booger,
bush ape and skunk ape are some of the more common ones." -
From the
Texas Bigfoot Research
Center
homepage
So, that should clear that up.

Jefferson is definitely on my places-to-visit-in-Texas list too. Not only does it seem like a cool little town with some really beautiful cypress swamps to photograph, but it's one of the most haunted towns in Texas as well. The perfect place for a weekend Scooby Doo adventure. They've even got a carriage-drawn ghost tour and a ghost train. Beat that.

So here's the top five places (right now) that I want to road trip to in Texas.

  1. Marfa - I'm dying to see those lights. Have a good ole X-Files-esque weekend.
  2. Big Bend National Park - maybe swing by Boquillas and Alpine while I'm at it.
  3. Jefferson
  4. Corpus Christi - If nothing else, it will be good research for the book I plan to write with the same name.
  5. Luckenbach - Though I'm afraid this place may have become over-commercialized (I get that vibe from Web site), Ben M. has instructed me that I must visit. I do love the Hill Country... so maybe I should go - spin some girls cross that old dancehall floor.

Arlo in snow

Arlo just after a brief snowfall. I love this shot. Posted by Hello
I decided to do a little photo-blogging today to spice things up.
Maybe it is because I am probably going to the DMA today and I wanted to insert a little more visual-ness into the blog.
Who knows?
Maybe I'm just bored.

Oh Death

A grave marker in the St. Boniface cemetary in New Dixie, Arkansas. Marks the final resting place of three Lipsmeyer children, the oldest of whom lived to be 11. The top inscription reads "Weep not Momma and Daddy, we'll wait for you in heaven." Posted by Hello
